Rubbing Alcohol is another name given to the Solvent Isopropanol. It is also commonly known as Isopropyl Alcohol, IPA, C3H3O, Propan-2-ol and 2-Propanol. Rubbing Alcohol is a clear, colourless Solvent which emits a strong odour. It is particularly effective at general industrial cleaning and de-greasing.
Rubbing Alcohol is used in the computer industry for cleaning electronic pins in computer equipment, computer keyboards and computer monitors. Additionally, it is used to clean DVD's and CD's and to clean mobile phones. Rubbing Alcohol is a major ingredient in fuel additives. It is also used in windscreen de-icer aerosol sprays and can be put in windscreen washer bottles to keep the liquid contents from freezing in cold weather.
IPA has sterilizing properties and cleaning wipes for industry and commerce are often impregnated with a solution of IPA. Additionally, Isopropanol is used to preserve biological specimens and it is considered a safer alternative to Fomaldehyde. Rubbing Alcohol is used to clean paintballs before re-use and also to remove traces of brake fluid from hydraulic brake systems.
So far as Isopropanol Safety is concerned, Rubbing Alcohol is less Toxic than other Solvents including Methanol and Ethylene Glycol. However, as with all Solvents, Rubbing Alcohol does present some hazards and care should always be taken when working with or handling the material. Rubbing Alcohol is a very effective de-greaser and has the potential to strip skin of fat, causing skin to become very dry. For this reason, Isopropanol-resistant gloves should always be worn when using Isopropanol. Full protective clothing should also be worn, with overalls made out of IPA-resistant material. In the event of a spillage, overalls should be washing thoroughly before re-use.
The fumes and vapours produced by Rubbing Alcohol are damaging to the respiratory system so Rubbing Alcohol should always be used in a well-ventilated area or under fume extraction. Rubbing Alcohol is highly Flammable in its pure state, so must always be kept away from potential sources of ignitiion such as naked flames, sparks and static electricity. Smoking must never take place in the vicinity of Rubbing Alcohol. For further information on Isopropanol Safety and Isopropanol Hazards, please refer to the relevant pages of this website.

Some suppliers are accredited to recognised Quality and Environmental Standard such as ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management System, BS 8555 Environmental System and ISO 14001:2004 Environmental Management System. By purchasing Rubbing Alcohol from an accredited supplier with a proven track record, you will be assured of the safe production of a quality product.
