Propan-2-ol is another name for Isopropanol, a clear, colourless, highly Flammable Solvent with a wide ranges of uses in industry and commerce. Propan-2-ol is also commonly known as Isopropyl Alcohol, IPA, Rubbing Alcohol, 2-Propanol, Isopropanol and has a chemical formula of C3H3O.
Propan-2-ol is used for general cleaning in industry and as a de-greaser. Propan-2-ol is used to preserve biological specimens as it is considered a safer alternative to Fomaldehyde. Propan-2-ol is used to impregnate sterlizing wipes and cloths for sanitisation of telephone equipment etc. Propan-2-ol is used to clean electronic contact pins and to clean computers and computer-related equipment such as keyboards, laptops, DVD's, CD's, mobile phones and computer screen monitors. Propan-2-ol is commonly used in aerosol form to act as a de-icer for vehicle windscreens. It is also used in dilute form to fill vehicle wdinscreen washer bottles.
Propan-2-ol is highly Flammable in its pure state and should be kept away from combustible materials and potential sources of ignition including naked flames, static electricity, sparks and smoking. Propan-2-ol has a strong odour and should always be handled in a well-ventilated area or under fume extraction when large quantities are being used.
Propal-2-ol can cause poisoning through ingestion, inhalation and absorption. Symptoms of Isopropanol poisoning include sickness and nausea, vomiting, headaches, dizziness, depression of the central nervous system and can lead to anaesthesia and coma.
Propan-2-ol has a Specific Gravity of 0.79. Propanol-2-ol is produced by combining water and Propylene. There are two methods of Isopropanol manufacture, the first ebing the newer method known as the direct hydration reaction method and the seonc being the traditional method of Isopropanol manufacture known as the sulphonation reaction method, followed by hydrolysis. Further details of these two methods of Isopropanol manufacture can be found on the page of this website entitled Isopropanol Manufacture.
Legislation governs the transporting of Ispropanol, which has a UN Number of 1219 for transport. Propanol-2-ol is classed as a Packing Group II material, Dangerous Goods for Transport. It is essential that drivers of vehicles carrying Propanol-2-ol have received appropriate training and have the necessary qualifications to carry the goods in the amounts being transported. Emergency equipment should always be carried on vehicles, appropriate to the size of the load being carried. Further details of the regulations applying to transporting Propan-2-ol can be found on the page of this website entitled Transporting Isopropanol.
Please take time to look at the various other pages of this website which contain other information on various aspects of Propan-2-ol including Isopropanl Uses, Isopropanol Hazards, Isopropanol Safety and Isopropanol.
